Fashion: Winter Wonders

ree

Here we have a look at how to be stylish and comfortable throughout the unpredictable British winter weather

It’s a conundrum every woman faces as the weather gets colder... what do you wear? As if it wasn’t hard enough to strike the balance between fashion and a need to actually stay warm, there are other factors thrown at us – such as frosty mornings that evolve into blazing sunshine, or clear skies which unexpectedly turn grey with gloomy clouds threatening a downpour.

Fortunately, we live in the 21st Century where smart fabrics, ergonomic footwear and adaptable fashion reigns supreme.

Happy feet

Let’s begin with your feet. They take a battering all year long as they are exposed to the sun and pounded on during outdoor hikes before being mercilessly rammed into tight leather boots that restrict blood flow and pressurise them into unnatural positions.

However it doesn’t have to be this way. In fact, we have more options than ever to treat our feet to healthy footwear. These days there are a huge selection of stylish trainers, walking boots and even wellies that offer comfort, breathability and are hardwearing.

Even orthotic shoes look great with many specialist brands offering everything from Chelsea boots to loafers and even ballet flats which not only look great but also have inner support.

Breathable fabric

Sweating in the heat is one thing, but sweating in cold weather is particularly unpleasant. In order to avoid turning up to the office bundled up in constricting and uncomfortable clothing consider layers of fabrics that don’t restrict air.

Merino wool is a gift for commuters who have to travel into work through all weathers and then sit in an air-conditioned office all day. It’s light, natural and breathable while also keeping you lovely and snug.

Top a merino jumper with a rain resistant, lightweight jacket, and you’re basically invincible.

Elemental

When it comes to unpredictable weather – it’s your accessories that will save you. If you need to carry a bag, invest in a water-resistant one that looks stylish (yes, these do exist), then wear a light, crossbody purse for your phone and cards which can be tucked under a raincoat while also allowing you easy access to your essentials.

Rain hats may sound like a ludicrous concept, but there are some out there that are stylish, quick drying and don’t look ridiculous. Alternatively, get yourself a lightweight but resilient umbrella or a raincoat with a hood that will actually keep you dry.

Wrap it up

Finally, think about practical, flexible warmth. Turtle and polo necks are great to keep your neck toasty, alternatively if you want something adaptable consider a silk scarf that can be taken off and stowed easily.
