Homes Extra: The Finishing Touch

ree

The finishing touches of a home can lift it into a warm, cosy and loved space dripping in personality, style and seasonal interest

What makes a house a home? The structure, décor and furnishings certainly go a long way to achieving homely perfection, but to make your home a personal space, may I suggest looking at the finishing touches?

We are talking about the interior or architectural details and hardware, the soft furnishings and elements that can elevate the decor which are sometimes not given the credence they are due.

Choosing just the right door handle or cushions can pull a room together beautifully, picking up accent colours, themes, styles and periods, which connect not only the room but allows different spaces to flow. And this is the perfect time of year, as the weather changes and we sink deeper into autumn, to reassess your seasonal colours and textures and turn your home into a haven of cosy corners and sumptuous fabrics – inviting you to nest down through the winter.

Hardware

Interior or architectural hardware covers the three aspects of functionality, security, and aesthetics. Examples around the home include door hardware (such as knobs and knockers, hinges, and locks); and window hardware, such as the window stay – the arm with holes which supports a window open or securely closes it, available in different styles such as the traditional, illustratively named Monkey Tail or Shepherd’s Crook.

When talking about the security features of hardware this includes the obvious examples of locks, bolts and latches, but also encompasses window security and security for cabinets and cupboards within the home.

Functionality goes without saying – we all want smooth and easy turns, slides and locks when it comes to opening doors, pulling out draws, and locking windows. Optimum functionality provides the best in use and security.

Aesthetics also play a large part in which hardware you will chose for your home. Styles range from contemporary to traditional, each with their own character and appeal. For a cohesive look opt for a similar style through the house both internally and externally, not forgetting about things like a door knocker, house name or number.

Soft Furnishings

As we slip into autumn the need for soft furnishings in our homes increases – thick curtains to pull, plump cushions to sink into and blankets to snuggle up in, all help to turn our homes into cosy irresistible nests.

Soft furnishings are the perfect way to easily and cost effectively dress your home for the season. Move to the earthy, richer tones of autumn and winter; plum, russet red, moss, olive, and warm ochres and ambers.

Building a cosy nest involves layering and texture. Turn to sumptuous fabrics like velvet, wool, and faux fur which can be used for cushions, throws, rugs and curtains. You could even consider an embroidered wall hanging – which fits perfectly with the vintage maximalist trend that is currently on trend.

A few finishing touches here and there can make a surprising difference to your home. Not only will your home feel refreshed for the new season and beyond, but curating a space with layers, textures and warmth will fill it with genuine heart and soul.
