An effective guide on how to reduce plastic in the home

Reducing plastic in the home can be a great way to help the environment and live a more sustainable lifestyle. Here are some of our tried and tested ways to reduce plastic in your home.

1. Use Reusable Bags

Bring reusable shopping bags when you go grocery shopping instead of using plastic bags.

2. Install a home water filter

If you can get your hands on a fridge with a built-in water filter this is much more convenient then having a plastic brita filter in your home and more aesthetically pleasing. If you are someone who buys filtered water in plastic bottles, this would also minimise how much single-use plastic you are buying.

3. Reusable Containers

Store food in reusable glass containers instead of plastic bags or cling-film wrap. You can also now buy reusable beeswax wraps or silicone lids to cover bowls and dishes easily, with no plastic being involved!

4. Avoid Single-Use Plastic

Avoid buying single-use plastic items on your weekly shopping trip - if possible shop at a farmshop to avoid all fruit and vegetables being wrapped in plastic packaging. If buying meat, try to buy larger, 'bulk' portions which you can then divide up yourself. This will save on the amount of packaging coming home with you.

You can also look to shop at plastic-free supermarkets if you are lucky enough to have one near you! If you live in Sussex, we rate Harriet's of Hove.

5. If buying home essentials - try to buy in bulk

Buy in bulk to reduce packaging waste. You can bring your own containers to refill bulk items like rice, pasta, and spices.

6. Recycle Properly

Make sure to recycle all plastic items that can be recycled in your area. Check with your local recycling center to find out what types of plastics are accepted.

By reducing plastic in the home, you can help protect the environment and create a more sustainable future for all.
