Sussex Set For Icy Start To 2026 As Snow And Freezing Conditions Forecast

People across Sussex are being warned to prepare for a freezing start to the New Year, with snow and ice expected to affect parts of the county.

The Met Office has issued a snow and ice warning for the South East from midnight on Friday through to midday, as much colder Arctic air sweeps across the region.

Up to 2cm of snow is expected in places, with the potential for around 5cm on higher ground and in some localised areas.

Forecasters say strong northerly winds will make conditions feel even colder, with widespread frost likely.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber cold weather alert, urging people to look out for vulnerable friends, relatives and neighbours as temperatures plunge going into the first week of January.

Met Office forecasters say the cold spell is expected to continue into early January, urging residents to keep up to date with weather warnings and changing conditions.

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for journeys, check for disruption and be prepared for icy roads.

Meanwhile, the RNLI is urging anyone planning a New Year sea swim to take extra care, check tide times and weather conditions, avoid going alone, and ensure they have warm clothing and a hot drink afterwards.

Snow briefly fell across parts of the South East in November, but this is expected to be the first significant winter spell of the season for many areas.
