❄️ The Setup

On a snowy evening, guests gather at Winter Manor for an intimate dinner party. Outside, heavy snow has been falling for hours, blanketing the grounds.

At 9:30 p.m., the host, Mr. Edward Blackwood, excuses himself to his study.

At 10:00 p.m., a loud crash is heard.

Moments later, Mr. Blackwood is found dead in his locked study.

🔎 The Scene

  • The study door is locked from the inside

  • A window is open, with snow blowing in

  • Papers are scattered across the desk

  • A broken glass lies on the floor

  • There is a single set of footprints in the snow outside the window, leading away from the house

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 The Suspects

Five guests were inside the house:

1. Mrs. Blackwood (Wife)

“I was in the kitchen preparing tea. I heard nothing unusual.”

2. James Carter (Business Partner)

“I was in the lounge reading. I only heard the crash.”

3. Emily Reed (Family Friend)

“I was upstairs on the phone. The signal is better there.”

4. Thomas Green (Gardener)

“I had just come in from outside before the snow got worse.”

5. Clara Hayes (Housekeeper)

“I was cleaning the hallway near the study. I didn’t see anyone go in or out.”

🔍 The Clues

  • Snow has been falling steadily for hours

  • The footprints outside the window are clear and undisturbed

  • The window is large enough for a person to climb through

  • The study door was locked from the inside

  • No one else was found outside

  • The glass appears to have contained a drink

🧠 The Question

Who killed Mr. Blackwood — and how was it done?

Take your time. Look closely. Something doesn’t add up. When you think you've got the answer scroll below...

✅ Solution & Explanation (keep scrolling if you're sure....)

🕵️ The Killer: Thomas Green (the gardener)

💡 The Key Clue

The footprints in the snow are a setup.

  • Snow had been falling continuously for hours

  • If someone had truly escaped through the window earlier, the footprints would be partially covered

  • But they were described as clear and undisturbed

👉 This means the footprints were made after the murder, not during an escape

🧩 What Really Happened

  • Thomas Green had legitimate access to both inside and outside

  • He entered the study earlier and poisoned the drink (explaining the broken glass)

  • Mr. Blackwood later collapsed, causing the crash

Then:

  • Thomas went outside and created fake footprints leading away from the window

  • He opened the window from inside to stage a dramatic “escape”

  • He re-entered the house normally, blending in with the others

🚫 Why the Others Are Innocent

Mrs. Blackwood — no evidence contradicts her

James Carter — no physical link to the scene

Emily Reed — plausible alibi upstairs

Clara Hayes — being near the study actually works against her staging an unnoticed escape

🎯 Final Twist

The “locked room” wasn’t the mystery —

👉 The snow was.

🧠 Did You Solve It?

If you spotted the footprint inconsistency — nicely done, detective.
