Eternal Spring (Clean)

Why do a deep clean once a year when you can design your home for maximum cleaning ease, all year round

Keeping a home clean can feel like a never-ending task, but what if it doesn’t have to be that way? By making smart design choices, you can make the process far simpler and less time-consuming.

Choose maintainable materials

The surfaces you select play a huge role in cleaning ease. Opt for materials that resist stains and are simple to wipe down. Hard floors such as vinyl, laminate or sealed hardwood are easier to clean than carpets, which trap dust and allergens. When it comes to worktops, wood and natural stone may look good, but quartz or solid surfaces are less porous, making them resistant to staining and easier to sanitise. Finally, use washable paint finishes in high-traffic areas so marks can be wiped away without repainting.

Design your space smartly

A clutter-free layout reduces the number of surfaces where dust can settle, so avoid overly intricate architectural details like deep mouldings or ornate trims. Choose sofas and cabinets with legs so you can easily hoover underneath, and consider integrated cupboards and shelving which keep items organised and off the floor.

Ditch the dust collectors

Heavy drapes trap dust, so consider roller blinds or shutters for easier maintenance. Limit excessive cushions, rugs and throws and choose machine-washable fabrics for the ones you do have. Also, no matter how much you love your figurine collection, fewer ornaments mean fewer surfaces to dust. Select large statement pieces instead or keep your collection in a designated display cabinet.

Have access over affectation

Cleaning becomes a chore when you can’t reach certain areas such as awkward nooks behind furniture or appliances – built-in units are a good solution for this. Also, wall-mounted toilets and sinks make it easier to mop floors without obstruction, and keep cleaning supplies in each zone (a small kit in bathrooms and kitchens) so you can tackle any mess quickly and easily.

Trust the tech

You may fear the robots taking over humanity, so before they do, why not utilise them? Robot hoovers are a great way to keep floors consistently clean (provided your floor is clutter-free), and there are mop versions available now also. If you’re not ready for an automation invasion, you can select a self-cleaning dishwasher or oven instead.

Think ahead

Where possible, design with durability in mind. Easy-clean homes often rely on simplicity and quality, such as high-quality stain-resistant paint or carpets, preferably not in white or beige, as they are more vulnerable to visible staining. Finally, good ventilation reduces dust build-up and mould, making cleaning less frequent.
