Homes Extra: Smart Bathrooms

Sara Whatley

Turn your bathroom into a modern and luxurious sanctuary with the addition of smart features. Sara Whatley discovers more...

The increase in smart home technology has boomed in recent years, and now it’s time for bathrooms to join in the smart fun.

Smart technology is aimed at making your life easier, and in terms of a smart bathroom it can also increase hygiene, future proof your bathroom, save water and electricity, and make using your bathroom safer.

Some bathroom technology has been around for a while, underfloor heating and demist mirrors for example, but even these have undergone a transformation in terms of programming via smartphones and voice assistants.

If you are looking to update your bathroom to a smart space then it’sworth considering that some things are relatively easy to retrofit, the easiest being smart scales, but some improvements are more labour intensive and costly and may require remodelling, a plumber and an electrician.

Smart Toilets

Japanese toilets are renowned for leading in toilet technology, but some of the features are making their way to our shores too. Smart toilets in the UK offer water washing facilities – proving you with a cleaner and more comfortable experience, saving paper and being beneficial for those with limited mobility.

You will also find touch free flushing, seat warmers, self- cleaning functions, and often a more compact, space saving design.

Smart Furniture

From your vanity unit to your wall hanging cabinet, bathroom furniture is going smart. With built in Bluetooth speakers you can connect and listen to your favourite music, podcasts and news while you get ready for your day or soak in the tub.

Mirrors

Demist mirrors have been around for a good while, but now they have turned even smarter with built in Bluetooth speakers, wireless charging, the ability to watch movies, check your emails, and even up your beauty regime with skin analysis technology!

Adjustable Privacy Glass

Now you can choose to change your glass when it suits you. Switch between transparency and opacity as your privacy needs change by simply setting automatic controls using your smartphone or voice assistant.

Responsive Shower Heads

Imagine your shower always adjusted to the perfect temperature every single time you get in; well now it can be! Responsive shower heads give you the ability to pre-program the heat of the water, the flow rate and duration of your shower. Not only is this very convenient, it also reduces the risk of burns and could potentially make a saving on water bills.

Smart Bath Filler

With no fussy taps, smart bath fillers are centrally controlled by a push button with the ability to set water temperature and flow digitally. You can opt for pre-set levels, so you can rest assured no bathroom floods are coming your way. There are even options for remotely running your bath, for the ultimate in luxury.

Motion Sensor Taps

For both ease and a sleek and elegant aesthetic, look to motion sensor taps for your sink. Water waste is dramatically reduced as the tap is only on when motion is sensed; they are much more hygienic too. The water temperature can be set to ensure a suitable wash every time.

Automatic Lighting

Lights at your command? Easy! Smart bathroom lighting allows you to control your lights remotely through a phone app or voice command. Play with the brightness and colour temperature of your lights, and even look to chromotherapy – changing the colour of your lights to suit your mood and enhance your bathroom experience. You can also opt for pre-set lighting scenes to suit different activities, such as ‘morning get up’ and ‘relaxing bath’.

Audiovisual Additions

Modernise your bathroom instantly with a stylish waterproof television, allowing you to watch a film in the bath or catch up on the news while you brush your teeth.

Smart Water Sensor

Use this clever device to detect leaks before they become an issue and cause damage to your home. Typically an electrical circuit is used to trigger an alarm when it encounters water and sends an alert to your phone, this could save you money and hassle.

Smart Scales

The quickest and easiest smart addition to make to your bathroom is smart scales. They will help you to keep on top of your health by logging your weight every time you weigh yourself, and some models will track body fat, water percentage and even bone density.
