Pure Inspiration

Newly opened in Haywards Heath, Inspiration Gift Shop has the perfect present for every occasion. Hanna Prince pays owner Rachel Taylor a visit to find out more

This April, Haywards Heath gained its first standalone gift shop. Set in the Orchards Shopping centre, right in the bustling heart of town, Inspiration Gift Shop is a treasure trove of browsable goodies. It might be aimed at present buyers; but scanning the shelves of jewellery, homeware, accessories and trinkets on display, I’m more than tempted to treat myself. “You’re not alone,” laughed owner Rachel Taylor. “I make sure that I get new things in every couple of weeks because a lot of people come in regularly to buy for themselves.”

Rachel knows her stuff when it comes to picking out perfect gifts. She spent ten years working as a sales agent in the fashion and gift industry, gaining a strong understanding of what customers want as well as a zest for selecting beautiful and unusual things. When she spotted a gap in the market in Haywards Heath and saw the empty unit at the Orchards, she decided to take the plunge and put her talent for present finding into her own business. “I wanted it to be here because Haywards Heath has such a thriving centre,” she explained. “There are lots of events – during the summer, there’s something happening almost every weekend, and parking is really easy as well.”

As the area’s only standalone gift shop, Rachel wanted Inspiration to cater for everybody. The creativity behind  the display and choice of products gives a luxe impression, but the prices are amazingly reasonable. Browsing the jewellery, I’m pleasantly surprised by an expensive-looking necklace that turns out to be just £20. “People can come in and buy anything from a card or a small gift for £5 to a £100 item,” said Rachel. “There’s plenty around the £10 to £15 mark too.”

The range is remarkably extensive. As well as clothes, jewellery and accessories, Rachel stocks inspirational signs, stationary and gorgeously tasteful homeware such as vases, photo frames and candles. If you have a hard-to-buy- for guy in your life, there’s something for him too. I notice place mats, wallets, delicious edibles and mugs – and, of course, some genius cards. With two young children, I also find myself gravitating towards the kids’ section, where I find a brilliantly unusual range of wooden toys, play makeup and other gifts you’re not likely to find in an average toy shop. “We put a lot of thought into the buying process,” explained Rachel, “so if you want something different then come to us!”

She plans to stock seasonally-inspired products, including Halloween gifts and a Christmas range – watch this space for original stocking fillers. And, best of all, customers are encouraged to make a request if they don’t see exactly what they want in store. As Rachel said: “We listen to customers. If there’s something you’re looking for, then just let us know.”
