An anecdote ramble with Bob Cryer and music from The Kites.

We are very excited to announce an evening with the legendary Barry Cryer OBE.

Barry Cryer is one of the country's best loved comedy writers, having written for Morecambe and Wise, Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson, Bruce Forsyth, Max Miller, Tony Hancock, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Richard Pryor, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Frankie Howerd, Kenny Everett, Spike Milligan, Dave Allen, and The Two Ronnies. He’s written with Graham Chapman, John Cleese, David Nobbs, Peter Vincent, Dick Vosburgh and John Junkin and as a performer, has appeared in TV and radio shows spanning over five decades. He’s a regular at the Edinburgh Festival and is one of the stars of Radio 4's “I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue”. He’s received awards from BAFTA, The Royal Society, The Press Guild and Montreux. He was made an OBE in 2001.

Bob Cryer is perhaps best known to TV audiences as series regular Glenn Donovan in Hollyoaks and whilst he hasn’t quite got the full soap dish, has also appeared in Eastenders, Coronation Street, Holby City, Doctors and the Bill. He was also a regular on BBC’s The Interceptor and has other TV credits including Victoria Wood, and Outnumbered. Bob’s theatre credits include The Sting and Into Thy Hands (Wilton’s), The Tempest (Barbican & Middle East Tour) and the Ardent Theatre “Party Lines” election night project. He trained at Lamda.

As writers together, they are perhaps best known as the creators of The Mrs Hudson’s Diaries series of books. They have since turned the books into a play for Wilton’s Music Hall (with the theatre company Spymonkey), as well as “Mrs Hudson’s Radio show” with Patricia Hodge and Miriam Margolyes for Radio 4 in 2018. They also collaborated on Barry’s own book of anecdotes “Butterfly Brain” in 2010.

The Kites
The Kites are a sum of significant parts – three songwriters in their own right, they are singer and virtuoso guitarist Mark Allen, soul vocalist and percussionist Jack Cryer and rhythm man with a sweet-toned voice Matt Hodgson.

Together they have enjoyed ten years of intimate and soulful gigs, with their close harmonies and original songs, bringing audiences to tears (good tears!). Their idiosyncratic style is part folk, blues and soul.

“One of the most life-affirming, chilled-out gigs I’ve been to.” Fringe Review
